Rain, Rain, Go Away? No!
Despite the dreariness of the chilly fall rain we’ve received over the last week or so, there is a silver lining in the clouds: Our landscape plants are getting ready for winter! A gentle, soaking rain like this is probably the best insurance policy we could have to get plants strong and happy going into winter.
We’ve really had quite a dry summer as of late, and landscape plants have been showing their stress. Until a week ago, lawns were browning out, and other trees, shrubs and perennials not given supplemental watering help were looking, well, crispy. With this nice, steady rain, plants will be well hydrated as fall temps continue to drop, and better able to withstand the bitter cold and winds our winter will bring. Hopefully we will not have as many evergreen plants suffering winter-burn (browning foliage/needles) to deal with next spring, and less incidence of winter tip die-back or winter-kill of other trees, shrubs and perennials.
So, remember, although the autumn colors are dismal for our personal enjoyment today, the plants themselves are thoroughly enjoying this deep, thirst-quenching drink! By Stephanie Girgen
