Fall color has been fantastic

Looking out at the garden today, there is lots of interest still. Always hate to call it quits for the year-this year especially with the dandy weather. Too bad it gets dark so early these days.

Fall color has been fantastic. Serviceberries still holding their bright salmon leaves-winds haven’t taken their toll, surprisingly. Clusters of white fruit on gray dogwood particularly profuse this season, favored by the Cedar Waxwings passing through. The trees are alive with their activity.

Even floral color still catches our eye-the perky little Allium ‘Ozawa” will hold its rosy globes well into winter. You can’t help but smile at spike of vibrant blue hat – like flowers of Monkshood that have defied an early snow.

Mary Meyer’s dandy selection of our native Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium ‘Blue Heaven’ has turned its shade of dusky maroon and will stand up all winter, unlike other cultivars on the market. Here’s a surprise – many Epimediums exhibit dashing fall color – foliage turning a fetching rosy salmon.

Stunning, November has redeemed itself – glad we didn’t pack it in during October though, to tell the truth we are almost ready for the upcoming season.
