Garden Lilies
Looking for a mid summer blooming perennial for your sunny garden that is easy to grow? Then choose a garden lily.
I was walking through my garden yesterday and was so happy to see the beginning of the summer lily bloom time. My Asiatic type lilies are starting to bloom, and I will have lilies blooming into August when the Oriental types (which are so wonderfully fragrant) start to bloom.
Lilies are so easy to grow! They love full sun sites (which means 6 hours or more of full sunlight every day) and evenly moist well-drained soils. If you have really heavy clay soils that don’t drain well, stay away from lilies.
You can buy lily bulbs dormant in the spring, and sometimes even the autumn in the garden center. You will also find lilies blooming in containers in mid summer and it is a great time to see the actual flower color before you buy them.
There are dwarf lilies that only grow to about 12” tall, and you can also find tall lilies up to 4’ in height. Many, many varieties are in the 2-3’ height range. Lilies will multiply each year, so every year you will get a larger clump with more stems, and of course, more flowers. They are a great value. There are more to choose from than the Asiatic and Oriental – look for the old fashioned tiger lilies, the shade-tolerant Martagon lilies, and a new type called Orienpets – these are crosses between Orientals and trumpet lilies. Colors range from white, yellow, red, orange, pink, purple and bi-colors. I love to use lilies as cut flowers in bouquets.
It’s truly one of my top five favorite perennials. Try them; I know you’ll like them! by Debbie Lonnee
