Celebrate with trees!
Today is Earth Day, and next Friday, April 30th is Arbor Day. Both days are celebrated by traditional tree plantings, and with this early beautiful spring we’ve had, it is the perfect time to get a tree in the ground.
Before you rush out to your neighborhood garden center to buy a tree, do a bit of homework. How big is your yard, and ultimately, how large of a tree would you like to have? Trees come in many sizes, some are quite small, and fit in smaller yards, and some are very large shade trees that can grow to 60-80’ or even higher. The shade these trees give off can be a Godsend, especially in the hot dog days of summer.
Did you know that proper placement of shade trees can save you money on heating and cooling costs? Shading the house in the summer can reduce the amount of time your air conditioning is on. Another bit of homework you should do, is to know your soil type. Get out in your yard and dig up some soil and take a hard look at it. Soils here in Minnesota are usually sandy, clay, or nice black rich soils. Sometimes they are a combination of all three. But all drain differently, and knowing what your soil is like will help your garden center professional help YOU to pick out the right tree for your site. If you can’t quite figure it out, just put some in a little plastic bag and bring it right into the garden center for them to look at.
Most garden centers can provide you with some good instructions on planting. Be sure to follow the instructions and water in your tree well. You’ll be on your way to making this Earth a better place! by Debbie Lonnee
